Xoliswa Toto receives Nursing Excellence Award

News Description

GEORGE HERALD Xoliswa Toti, a 40-year-old mother of four from Thembalethu, is the star nurse of Mediclinic George this year. She received the 2016 Nursing Excellence Award only 11 months after joining the hospital. She worked as a home-based carer for Ithemba Lobomi for eight years before furthering her studies to become an auxiliary nurse. "I am passionate about my work. While I was working as a home-based carer, I dreamt of becoming a nurse. I love helping people who cannot help themselves. Caring for others is in my blood," she told the George Herald. She was "surprised and shocked" when she heard that she was selected for the award. Toti completed a three-month, home-based carer course at Ithemba Lobomi before she could work for them. In 2014, she qualified as an auxiliary nurse and was fortunate to be at appointed at Mediclinic. Before, she also worked at Dros Restaurant in the kitchen as pizza lady, where she requested her manager to put her on evening shifts so that she could be a carer for Ithemba Lobomi during the day. "I really love what I do. I now look forward to studying further. This is only the start. I am really thankful to Mediclinic for the opportunity and the motivation that I get from them." She is as dedicated to care for her family as for her patients. "When I return home from work, I put on my other Work clothes' to cook for my children and help them with homework. I have a 19-year-old, a 15-year-old and twins of 13." The award hand-over coincided with Mediclinic's celebration of International Nurses' Day last week. Nursing personnel was treated to a breakfast at 101 Meade Street Restaurant. Congratulating Toti, Mediclinic Manager Kassie Karstens said she always goes the extra mile. "She is also a team worker who shows respect for her patients and colleagues." Karstens thanked all the nurses for their dedication. "Mediclinic as a corporation has grown tremendously this last year, but it would not exist if it were not for you as our nursing personnel. For those who do not know, we are the third biggest hospital group outside of America. I am very proud to be the manager of this hospital - and it is because of you that work there." Mediclinic Southern Africa Nursing Executive Estelle Coustas said the hospital believes the role of nurses does not stop when they leave work. "Rather they continue to show the same care and attention to their families and those in their communities as they do during their working hours. Mediclinic's Nursing Excellence Award holds special significance because nominations are made by nursing peers of those who embody these values and ensure the best possible patient experience."
