New registrar for medical council

News Description

NEW AGE THE Board of Healthcare Funders of Southern Africa yesterday announced the departure of its MD Dr Humphrey Zokufa after 10 years at the helm. Zokufa has been appointed as the registrar of the Council of Medical Schemes. The board described Zokufa's departure as a "mix of sadness and gratitude". BHF chairperson Dr Clarence Mini said the board was excited about the potential for an improved association with the CMS. Zokufa is known for his stance in challenging what he called "exorbitant private hospital and specialists costs", calling for regulation in the sector. "Private hospital costs and specialists' costs must be regulated. Private healthcare costs are exorbitant," he said. "The BHF continues to call for prescribed minimum benefits fees to be capped at rates determined by schemes prevent exploitation of the medical funding system," Mini said. Mini said for universal healthcare to succeed, good governance and a coherent legislative and supportive policy framework among others were needed. "The BHF and its member ship embrace the principles of the White Paper and will continue to play a meaningful and constructive role in the best interests of our membership." Zokufa's appointment has not been well received by some, with the DA labelling Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi's decision as "improper".
