Minister to hold networking session

TNA REPORTER Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi and his MECs are today expected to hold a two-day media networking session on the National Health Insurance (NHI). This as the government prepares to push forward with the NHI fund that will help the country move away from a public and private health model. The NHI is aimed at giving South Africans equal access to quality healthcare services regardless of their socio economic circumstances. Presently 80% of South Africans rely on the already overburdened and overstretched public health use private healthcare. Overcrowding, lack of resources and infrastructure and a shortage of skilled healthcare workers including nurses and doctors among others are just some of the challenges facing the public health system in the country. The United Nations passed a resolution in 2012 urging the government to move towards providing universal access to quality healthcare services for all regardless of their socioeconomic conditions. All UN member states have.committed to work towards universal health coverage by 2030 as part of the Sustainable Development Goals. According to the World Health Organization figures at least 400 million people lack access to one or more essential health services worldwide, while a 100 million people are pushed into poverty and 150 suffer financial difficulties due to out of pocket expenditure for health services every year.
