PMB provides 'a medical hub'

News Description

NEW AGE The upsurge in the number of private hospitals in the greater Pietermaritzburg area is likely to turn the city into a continental medical hub, says the local Chamber of Business. The chamber's chief executive officer, Melanie Veness, speaking at a road show organised by Trade and Investment KwaZulu-Natal, said over the past five years there had been enormous growth in the private healthcare sector. She said virtually all major private hospitals had expanded and among the new ones built were a new eye clinic, while the famous Royal Hotel has been converted into a first class medical facility and a specialist neonatal hospital was also mooted. "We need to develop strong partnerships to make the most of what is happening naturally without much intervention and it is something we need to support," Veness said. "When the private sector sees an opportunity for growth, our job is, in partnership, to make sure that the environment for business is as conducive as possible. "All we have to do is to provide those basic services well and make them more affordable than they are elsewhere. In some cases our tariffs are no longer competitive."
