News Description

BUSINESS DAY Sipho Kabane has been appointed CEO and registrar of the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS), the watchdog agency for the R180bn industry. The CMS is a statutory body, charged with regulating medical schemes and their administrators, and ensuring patients get a fair deal. Kabane has held the job in an acting position for a little more than two years, following the sudden death of former registrar Humphrey Zokufa. He assumed the acting position on January 31 2017 after working for seven months as a senior strategist at the CMS; before that he had largely worked in the public sector. Kabane ran his own GP practice for 11 years in the Free State, before working for the Free State provincial health department, where he was head of department for three years until he joined the Limpopo health department in January 2013. He was head of health in Limpopo until September 2015, when he moved on to work in the national health department. The Limpopo health department received qualified audits from the auditor-general in 2013/2014 and in 2015/2016, and an unqualified audit with findings in 2014/2015.
